Colds, flu and allergens such as pollen and animal dander usually trigger asthma. Signs and symptoms of asthma usually include the following:

- Rapid breathing
- Retractions: ribs and clavicles are more noticeable during breathing
- Wheezing: a whistling sound with expiration
- Child might complain of a tight feeling in the chest.
- Dry cough usually increases at night.

If your child experiences any of these symptoms and does not have a history of asthma, please call and speak with one of our nurses for further assistance. In the event your child is having severe difficulty of breathing, please call 911.

If your child does have a history of asthma, give him/her a nebulizer treatment of rescue medication (albuterol or xopenex), and call the office to speak with one of our nurses for further information.

The flu season is coming upon us. The best way to guard against the flu is vaccination. This year's flu vaccine protects against H1N1 and two strains of the seasonal flu. all children 6 months and older, especially those with asthma, should get vaccinated. The best time to get vaccinated is now so please call our office for an appointment.

HAND WASHING

In addition to vaccinations, hand washing is another important step you can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Below are some tips and instructions as to how and when to wash your hands your child"s hands.

WHEN TO WASH HANDS:

- Before eating
- After sneezing and coughing
- After blowing yours or your child's nose into a tissue
- After using the bathroom
- After changing a diaper
- After caring for the sick
- After handling garbage
- After petting or handling an animal
- After playing outside

HOW TO WASH YOUR HANDS:

- Wet hands with clean, running, preferably warm, water.
- Apply soap.
- Rub hands together to make lather and scrub on all surfaces.
- Continue rubbing hands for 20 seconds by humming or singing "Happy Birthday" twice.
- Rinse hands well under running water.
- Dry your hands completely using a paper towel.

*If clean running water is not available, use an alcohol-based gel (at least 60% alcohol) to clean hands. However, hand washing with soap and water is always preferred.

HOW TO PROPERLY USE AN ALCOHOL-BASED HAND SANITIZER:

- Apply product to palm of one hand -usually a dime size or amount of product indicated on the label.
- Rub hands together. Apply the product over all surfaces of the hands and fingers until hands are dry.

CAR SAFETY:

Children should ride rear facing up to age 2 and use a booster until at least age 8
