SOS (Safety of Summer) -- Posted on Friday, May 28 2010
During the summer months, most of us will be outside, enjoying the weather, having lots of fun. Below are some tips on how to be safe and have fun during the exciting outdoor season of summer.
SUN PROTECTION:
* Sunscreen should be applied to all children ages 2 months and above. Apply 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. The SPF should be 15 or greater. Stay in the shade whenever possible. The sun is the strongest between 10 am and 4 pm.
* Infants younger than 2 months of age should avoid direct sun exposure, and wear light colored clothing. Dress infants in lightweight long pants, long sleeved shirts and brimmed hats when outside.
* Make sure to bathe your child at the end of the day to remove excess sunscreen.
--- AVOID SUNSCREENS THAT CONTAIN INSECT REPELLENT ---
INSECT REPELLENT:
* An insect repellent containing 30% DEET is recommended for children over 2 months of age.
* Avoid a combination of sunscreen and insect repellent products. Insect repellents do not need to be reapplied; however, sunscreens do.
* Avoid dressing your child in bright colors or flowery prints since they tend to attract insects.
* Make sure to bathe your child at the end of the day to remove excess insect repellent.
HEAT AND EXCERCISE:
* Intense physical activity that can last 15 minutes or more should be shortened whenever high heat and humidity reach critical levels.
* Children who participate in prolonged physical activity should hydrate themselves prior to and during the activities. Periodic drinking of cold water should be enforced and monitored during activities.
* Clothing should be light in color and lightweight.
BICYCLE SAFTEY:
* Children need to wear a helmet on every bike ride no matter how short the ride is - even in the driveway.
* A helmet should be worn so that it is level on the head, not tipped forward or backward. the strap should be securely fastened.
* When purchasing a helmet, make sure it meets CPSC safety standards.
